Shimla. Cancer hospital, IGMC Shimla conducted a symposium on Cancer of ovary under the banner of Ist Himachal Pradesh Chapter of Genitourinary and gynaecological malignancy in collaboration with Oncological Society of Himachal Pradesh.

It was attended by more than 75 oncologists from north India. All the oncologists working in Himachal Pradesh attended the symposium.
Dr Deepak Tuli Assistant Professsor, Cancer hospital Shimla told the gathering that as per Globocan 2020 Data, in india approximately 50000 new patients of ovarian Cancer are registered.

It comprises 3rd most common cancer in females. In the world 300,000 new cases of ovarian Cancer are diagnosed each year. At least 60% of these are diagnosed with advanced disease.

70% of these patients relapse within three years of first line treatment. 5 year survival for newly diagnosed advanced ovarian Cancer is less than 50 percent.

Dr Shivani Sharma and Professor Dr Mrs Kavita Mardi, IGMC Shimla dwelled upon the special pathological features of ovarian Cancer and emphasized about the hereditary and Familial nature of the disease in approximately 10-15% of the patients.She further discussed the role of new biomarkers.

Dr Jyoti Vajpayee from Mumbai emphasized the importance of pre and post test genetic counselling for all the patients of ovarian Cancer who are advised Genetic testing.She further insisted on availability of genetic counsellor’s and genetic testing in the premier institute like IGMC Shimla.

Dr Atul Sharma, the only Gyanec oncologist from Himachal Pradesh who is at present working in the Kamla Nehr u hospital, IGMC Shimla informed the delegates that the most important prognostic marker for the cure of ovarian Cancer patient is the surgery.

He told that if complete surgery of the patient is done without leaving any residual disease then probability of cure is maximum. His views were fully endorsed by Dr Mrs Kushla Pathania, Prof and Head, Dept of Obs&Gyne, IGMC Shimla.

Dr Pravesh Dhiman, Associate Professor, Medical Oncology, AIIMS Bilaspur discussed about the different research work done all around the globe and gave guidelines for treatment of Ovarian Cancer with the chemotherapy drugs.

Dr Amit Sherawat, Associate Professor, Medical Oncology, AIIMS Rishikesh emphasized the importance of personalised and targated therapy for patients of our region under the guidelines given from different associations all over the world.

Dr Sumit Goyal, Associate Director, Medical oncology, Dr Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute Delhi apprised the audiences about the recent trend in management of the ovarian Cancer.

He also told about the newer drugs that have been discovered and used around the world. He told the oncologists that now generic drugs are available in our country from Indian pharmaceutical companies at a very nominal prices. So the treatment has now become more economical and our patients are now able to afford it.

Dr Manish Gupta, Prof & Head, Cancer hospital, Shimla concluded the symposium with the thank you note with remarks that as the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer are non specific and most of the patients present in advanced stage.

It is important that the management of patient is decided by the multidisciplinary tumor board in consultation with the patient and the family. All aspects of the disease including the economical factors and genetics should be taken into consideration for the best result.
